Our Food Pantry Ministry Reflections
Hollis Avenue Congregational Church, UCC food pantry started as a food drive in 1981. Members and friends dropped food in a basket at the door. Thanksgiving and other special days food was brought to the altar.
The food pantry expanded and we started receiving food from the food bank. We have grown from serving our clients from a small area to a Fellowship thirty-five feet by seventy feet. Today we partnership with the following friends and organizations;
- Food Bank City Harvest
- United Way Members and Friends
- Whole Food Schools
- Libraries Privates Sources
The food pantry provided in 2019 bags of grocery for over 1,000 families, which included enough for over 998,000 meals. A client can receive weeklyand upon special request. We strive to provide well-packed bags of food each week.
If you visit us on any Tuesday, do not be surprised if you hear laughter, for it truly is a fun working environment. Every week people tell us what a great thing this church is doing and how much they appreciate what we do and the way they are treated. I think that is what this ministry is about – whether it is getting food, clothing, or just having someone listen. We want people to feel better after coming here. I find every year that the people who serve in this ministry do so because they want to help others. We are still here because there is still a need and because we have people willing to help address the need.
May God bless our volunteers (appx 16)

There is no shame in asking for help. Life circumstances sometimes create times of need. No one should have to go hungry.
